Swine Flu
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I find information about the swine flu?
A. Information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, at the U.S. Health and Human Services website and at the World Health Organization
Q: What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
A: Here is the most recent guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
If you experience flu-like symptoms, consider staying at home and contacting your health care provider;
If you have the flu, limit contact with others to keep from infecting them;
When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth and dispose of any tissues you use;
Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner (for at least fifteen seconds), especially after you cough or sneeze;
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to prevent the spread of the virus; and
Try to avoid close contact with sick persons.
Q: Will a mask be effective in the workplace?
A: We are following the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding the use of masks in the workplace. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Information on the effectiveness of face masks and respirators for the control of influenza in community settings is extremely limited. Thus, it is difficult to assess their potential effectiveness in controlling swine influenza A (H1N1) virus transmission in these settings.” We will continue to monitor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations and take appropriate actions as necessary.
Q. What if an employee has been advised to wear a mask at work?
A: If an employee has been advised by a medical professional of the need to wear a mask while at work, the employee may do so as long as the employee provides proper medical documentation.
Q. Will SSA provide and encourage the use of antibacterial soaps in offices and restrooms?
A: Normal hand washing with soap and water has been shown to be adequate in protecting people from person to person transmission of bacteria and viruses. Antiseptic handrubs are also effective in controlling bacteria and viruses if used on otherwise clean hands. Managers will provide hand sanitizers to employees in direct public service contact positions.
Q: Will employees be directed to take claims from individuals exhibiting flu like symptoms?
A: Employees should follow existing procedures regarding contagious diseases such as the policy found in GN 00203.010C. The preferred method for interviewing members of the public with contagious diseases is to schedule interviews by telephone. If the claimant does not have a telephone, attempt to establish a third-party contact to handle Social Security business by telephone.
